Things To Do With Your Kids: Hiking – Brown-Lowery Provincial Park

Location: The trailhead is located off of Plummers Road, just south of Priddis. Make sure to bring a map as cell service is spotty and there are no road signs along the way.
Elevation Change: 143 m
Duration: 4.8 km (took us 2 hours roundtrip with a stop at the top for a picnic)

As I mentioned in my post about Grassi Lakes Trail, we love to go hiking with Clara, but don’t do it as much as we would like. One of the main reasons is because we don’t look forward to long drives just to go for a hike. The amount of effort it takes, makes it feel like an activity we really have to plan for and schedule ahead of time. In an effort to get us out hiking again I went on a search to find some trails closer, that we could easily get to. That’s when I discovered a provincial park I had never heard of, just a short drive from our house, that offers easy hikes for kids around Calgary – Brown-Lowery Provincial Park.

Brown-Lowery Provincial Park

This hidden gem of a park is located just south of Priddis and offers a variety of hiking options that are all fairly easy to navigate with kids. We have been out twice so far this year and the first time we did a quick hike along the Wild Rose Loop. We only had about an hour so we weren’t able to complete the whole loop the first time – which is just shy of 5 km – but the second time out we completed it and got these amazing pictures.

The complete loop took us 2 hours, with a stop at the top for a picnic. The wild flowers and grass were quite high at some places on the trail – well over Clara’s head – and while she enjoyed pushing through it at first, eventually it got to be too much for her and we carried her the rest of the way.

What To Bring

There are washrooms right at the start of the trailhead in the parking lot, but after that you’re on your own. Also, while this trail is beautiful and winds through some gorgeous forests, that also makes the trail littered with tree roots. You definitely could not take a stroller and any little ones you have walking will likely find their footing hard to maintain at times. Clara still thoroughly enjoyed it, but we did put her in a carrier for awhile when she got too tired.

We recommend bringing a baby carrier,  a blanket and lots of water and food (I’ve linked to the things we use). The lookout point at the top of the Wildrose Loop is gorgeous and worth sitting down and taking a break at. It’s also a great place for your kid(s) to explore while you sit and relax.

If you’re looking for easy hikes for kids around Calgary, then Brown-Lowery Provincial Park is a great hidden gem just south of the city.
