Things To Do With Your Kids: Heritage Park

I have always loved Heritage Park and now that I have a kid of my own, Heritage Park is one of the best things to do in Calgary. For as long as I can remember there’s something about the old timeyness of it that really speaks to me. Don’t believe me? When Dashing Wife and I started dating 15 years ago (!) we went to Heritage Park for a private tour of the grain elevator.

Because nothing says romance like a grain elevator.

I love wearing a vest with my suit, and I’m fascinated by the simplicity and, at times, crushing difficulty that our ancestors went through to get us where we are today. Plus, who doesn’t love riding the caterpillar?

As Heritage Park has evolved over the years it has only increased the amount of things there are to do. What has surprised me, is how there is something to do for every age range.

Heritage Park For Kids

Heritage Park is such an awesome playground for kids. It starts right at Gasoline Alley, where they have a kids section that allows them to draw, play with games and blocks and – if they’re under 6 – play on tricycles around a super cool road set up.

As you journey into the park, there’s more things to do than you can pack into one day. Trust me, I’ve tried. If you want to get the experience of riding on a steam locomotive, they have that. Want to go on some rides including a Ferris wheel, Merry-Go-Round and boat swings? They have that. Want to play carnival games? Done. How about go on a horse wagon ride? No problem. Tired and need to eat? Head to the hotel, candy store, Drew’s Saloon, or the always popular bakery.

Check out the animals including, horses, pigs and turkeys (full disclosure, Clara got super excited by the turkeys and tried to poke one and it nibbled on her finger. Some lessons you have to learn the hard way).

Just want to sit and watch your kids play on the playground? They’ve got you covered there as well!

Heritage Park For Adults

Heritage Park is also a great place for adults to go for a night out.

The Selkirk Grille sits outside of the admission gates, so you don’t need to enter the park to enjoy a meal here. The Selkirk consistently ranks among Calgary’s finest restaurants and has been featured in Avenue Magazine.

Heritage Park has also added a number of ticketed events throughout the year that make for perfect date nights, like the Big Rock Brewery Workshop.

Special Events Year Round

As fate would have it, today is exactly six months until Christmas and it just so happens that Once Upon A Christmas at Heritage Park is one of my favourite Christmas traditions every year! If you catch the perfect day where the snow is gently falling, but the temperatures aren’t too cold, it’s like stepping into a winter wonderland. Filled with horse drawn sleigh rides, camp fires, carollers and hot cider it’s just awesome.

In addition to Once Upon A Christmas, Heritage Park also has events like Ghouls Night Out, Harvest Festival, Haunted Ghost Tours and more!

  1. […] Heritage Park is a historical village located on the Glenmore Reservoir. It’s open every day during the summer and on reduced hours in the fall and winter and is an awesome place to spend a whole day with your kids. […]

  2. […] Heritage Park has been one of our favourite activities in the city since Clara was born. We had our seasons passes all ready to go when COVID-19 hit, and greatly missed hanging out there this past summer. […]
