Word Party Applesauce Sky

What the $*%$& Is An Applesauce Sky?

If you have a toddler and you have a Netflix subscription than it is very likely you have watched Word Party at some point.

If you’re not familiar, Word Party focuses on four baby animals – Kip, Bailey, Lulu and Franny – who are learning words. Each time they need help learning a word they call for Word Wally and with the help of the “big kids,” ie: your child watching, they learn all sorts of different words. Then they have a word party.

All of that is fine. It’s basic child entertainment and while it’s not particularly stimulating for me, Clara loves it. She especially loves to dance to the opening song and to most of the other songs they sing.

One of these songs however, send me into a rage like no other. It makes no sense.

Under An Applesauce Sky

What the actual F%$# is an Applesauce sky??

If you don’t know what I’m talking about here’s a video clip of it.

I’ve asked around, I’ve Googled, and I haven’t found a SINGLE person that can tell me what an applesauce sky is.

Applesauce is not the same colour as a sky, it is not the same consistency of a sky. There is nothing about the two things that is similar at all.

What. The. Actual. Hell.

The only reasonable explanation I’ve come up with is that he really likes applesauce, so would love to sit under a sky made of applesauce.

I was so determined to find out what the writers of Word Party meant by applesauce sky that I sent them a request to be interviewed.

Sadly they ignored me.

The worst part of this whole ordeal is that it gets stuck in my head for days. DAYS!

Please send help. Have you watched Word Party? Do YOU know what an applesauce sky is? Help solve the mystery! Save my sanity!

I just googled Applesauce Sky and this blog was the top hit. So I call this term ‘BS’. Personally I feel this was just the writers attempt at being artsy and silly.

Closest I can figure it’s a reference to the clouds or type of clouds in the sky. At least that’s my explanation when someone says wtf is an applesauce sky!! Which is what my first response was too lmao

They’re just trying to be artistic and throw in some easy and meaningless metaphors to break up the monotony of writing songs for a kids show for a living … no one ever questioned the Beatles’ ridiculous lyrics, so why should we as parents? The song drives me crazy too, but not because of the applesauce sky thing—oh, no—it goes waaaaay deeper than that … Bailey is intended to represent the type of introverted, thoughtful and pragmatic personality category that some kids fall into, but while HE is repeatedly exonerated for basking in glorious solitude under the “applesauce” shade of his favorite tree, I was forced to repeat an entire year of kindergarten for choosing to do the exact same thing at recess every day, under my OWN tree, because the invisible Powers That Be decided I wasn’t developing social skills properly … I didn’t even find this out until much later in life—shortly before getting arrested in high school for “socializing” too much with a “controlled substance,” so I really don’t know what the whole point of that second year was—but anyway, yeah, it’s a comfort food for the kid, so his childlike mind compares it to the sky in the moments when he feels most at peace with himself and the world around him—the moments when he’s able to relax and enjoy his own company … glad the world is finally becoming more accepting of weirdos like us, I guess …

I would sign the petition. I want to know what they were thinking when creating this stupid song. A song that comes up more than once throughout the episodes.

Applesauce was slang in the 1920’s for “nonsense” So….I think you are all falling into the joke behind the song. The song has no true meaning, bailey is just singing a catchy tune, just like most kid shows throughout time have done. I have a 14yr old & 19 month old there has & will always be catchy tunes for kiddos that drive the parents nuts… I mean can you tell me the point if a song the never end???

Applesauce is old time slang (1940s) for nonsense, or something that is silly.
So maybe that’s what it meant. A sky that is not too serious, and light hearted like the Elephant.

Thank you for explaining what it meant it was driving me nuts. I was like ”this show is supposed to be educational how can it be when applesauce has nothing to do with the sky”

Here’s my thought after spending less than two minutes thinking about this. I’m not sure hearing this song would have triggered a similar reaction but a friend on Facebook posted the same question, so I Googled. Didn’t find anything either except Dashing Dad’s commentary.

Baily(?) starts out singing under a tree. The song writer might have envisioned an apple tree because who wants to sit under a plain old tree. Let’s make it an apple tree. That’s way more exciting and fun for children. I grew up on a farm in KY. We had an apple orchard. Indeed, apple trees are way more fun. Not only can you play under the tree in the shade in summertime, you can easily climb the apple tree – all while eating the apples. That’s the best part. Very happy and fond memories playing in the apple orchard as a child with family and friends. Later in life it was fun throwing the apples at each other but we won’t tell the little ones about that. They will learn that on their own soon enough. 😊

Most kids today don’t grow up with the simple pleasures of growing up on a farm or even ever seeing an apple tree – especially one nearby that they can play or sing under. However, MOST kids eat and love applesauce early in life and all parents I know make eating a time fun. My son loved applesauce. The song writer probably tried to associate a fun simple and relatable topic into the song because it’s a happy show. Very simple I know but every kid knows where the sky is and knows applesauce is pretty darn good. Kids don’t tend to like the sky when it looks threatening or stormy so why not make it an applesauce sky? It’s happy and fun to sing. 😊

An applesauce sky is actually a reference to the sky when we perceive it to be red. It looks pretty similar to applesauce and the character is infatuated with it.
It would help if the sky was actually animated along with the song…

I Googled it after having same thoughts, and found from Word Party my little and I enjoy often. Is in reference to a red sky though it was not red in color during song. However there were also Inappropriate references not @ all ok to relate to kids🤔🤬🙄This is weird all together for sure😜

I had the same question so I googled it and found this! However, the first thing I found was an urban dictionary entry that was very X-rated. Before I went on the search though I thought that maybe applesauce sky meant a sky with a lot of sunshine, since both applesauce and sunshine are yellow… who knows?!

Guys listen its just Baileys song. Lets think about it for a second, Baileys favorite thing is Applesauce. Every time he gets to eat it you can just see how much he enjoys it. So him sitting under the tree and looking at the sky does the same thing to him that applesauce does. It relaxes him and makes him happy, therefore why not associate the two together. Hence an Applesauce Sky! Hands down my favorite song in the show and Bailey is by far my favorite character!

My wife only today corrected me that Bailey wants to “trumpet my trunk” and did mean to say he’s got “junk in his trunk” even though, as a chunky kid, he kind of does…

Hello random internet dad. Just leaving a comment to say I concur and thank you for this. The whole show sends me into a rage. It’s incredibly stupid and thank goodness my son grew out of it (with his intelligence intact).

I just started watching this show with my son. Its a very catchy song. I, too, was perplexed by this applesauce sky lyric. Per urban dictionary, the term applesauce can be code for LSD. The writers may be referring to a very vivid, scenic sky. This is not uncommon in children’s animation. The animators of Disney movies used to embed profanities in their frames. Probably to keep themselves entertained as well. Just a guess!
