There are lots of great hikes for kids in Calgary and this one is perfect for all levels of ability. If you’re looking for a great way to get outside with your kids just beyond the city limits then I definitely recommend checking out Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area.

Location: At HWY 22X and 160th Avenue, just beyond the city limits. Elevation Change: Depends on Route Duration: 1-3 hours

This was our first trip to Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation area and it was an impressive one. This beautiful conservation area offers a number of well marked and well maintained trails. For our first time out we tried the 1km Mountain View loop and it was the perfect morning for Clara to get out and get some exercise with stunning views.

The complete loop took us just over an hour with plenty of stops for water, snacks and to collect rocks. All. Of. The. Rocks.

What to bring

There are washrooms at the main building at the start of the hike, however after that you are on your own. There are no garbage bins on any of the hikes and you are asked to pack out what you pack in. You are also not allowed to bring pets – like a dog – onto the property. You can find more info here.

We recommend bringing a baby carrier,  a blanket and lots of water and food . You could also bring a stroller if it’s fairly heavy duty. Also be sure to bring a hat for yourself and your little ones as this particular route doesn’t have any shade. Other routes wind through shaded wooded areas. There are, however, a number of benches along the way that offer great views and a perfect place to take breaks. Clara easily completed this whole hike, and could have continued on for longer if needed be. We will try a slightly longer trek next time!

If you’re looking for great hikes for kids in Calgary, then Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is a great hidden gem just south of the city.
