Things to do with your kids: Airport Playground

This post is sponsored by Canada Lands Company to promote the Airport Playground in the community of Currie. Experience and views are my own.

Ryker recently turned one month old (where does the time go?!?!) and as we get a grasp on our new life as a family of four, we’ve started venturing out of the house more and more. One of our latest adventures took us to the community of Currie.

We love to look through show homes to dream about future houses or come up with design ideas for our own house and Currie has some BEAUTIFUL houses. Some of them even have apartments over the detached garages!

Currie is a diverse collection of housing, green space and recreational opportunities all within reach of each other. Currie is designed to grow and accommodate a diverse breadth of people of varying ages, incomes, backgrounds and interests. Residents are empowered, challenged, inspired and energized to live as they’ve always wanted to.

One of the ways they do that is with the super cool Airport Playground.

Airport Playground

This is a pretty cool park and it’s easy to see why it was voted one of the best in Calgary. Clara loved the giant slide and climbing on EVERYTHING, including the cool little plane. One of my favourite parts was the abundance of sitting areas that are SHADED. How many parks have you been to where they have one bench and it’s in the middle of the hottest part of the whole park?

Another cool feature was the solar table. I hadn’t seen one of these before and it’s a wonder more playgrounds don’t have them. Not only do they offer some great shaded seating (if, for example, you’re a mother feeding your baby) but they come with four AC and four USB power outlets for charging phones, tablets etc. So, you can put your phone down, let it charge and spend some time playing with your kids!

When we went, the park was packed. Kids of all ages were enjoying all of the options including some of the ‘riskier’ play options. As I’ve mentioned before there are ‘dangerous’ things you should let your kids do and this playground offers some riskier options in a controlled environment to let your kids develop risk assessment and decision-making skills.

Also, maybe I’m weird (ok, I’m definitely weird), but I find the bouncy rubber playgrounds, like the one featured at the Airport Playground, fun to walk on. I know Clara and many of the playground friends she made had fun just jumping up and down.

Future of Airport Playground

While this playground was awesome, the future of the area is going to be super cool. Alexandria Park is a 13-acre park that will feature amazing amenities for all seasons including a splash pad, dog park, shelter space, amphitheater, winter skating rink and a TON of green space. Currently under construction, all of these cool amenities are scheduled to be completed in 2020.

After spending almost two hours at the park, we packed up in the car and headed over to the ideally located, Wildrose Brewery for lunch. In my opinion, every playground visit should come with a brewery stop after.

Next time you’re looking for something to do with your kids, head over to the community of Currie and check out the Airport playground!
