With everyone off work or school you’ll inevitably be looking for things to do with your kids over the holidays. Ultimately, the thing kids will remember most when they look back on holiday’s gone past is the time you spend together as a family. Playing hockey at the lake, tobogganing, playing in the snow, all of these things are the memories that last a lifetime.

I was recently on CTV Morning Live to share a list of things to do with your kids this Christmas and whether you’re looking to stay in town or head out of town I’ve got something for everyone, including one idea I didn’t share on tv!

Family Day Trips

Royal Tyrrell

My dad grew up in Drumheller, so I have a lot of memories of playing in Drumheller.

As part of their recent $9 million expansion The Royal Tyrell has made a real effort to create a space that is more interactive for kids. The new Learning Lounge exhibit features the Albertosaurus with interactive displays and activities.

This day trip is awesome because you get to take a walk through one of the largest dinosaur collections in the entire world. Museum is open 10 – 5 and Children six and under are free and an adult pass is just $19 for the day.

Banff Gondola

From now until December 30, load up in your mountaintop sleigh and soar to the top of Sulphur Mountain for some Christmas cheer. They’re even open Christmas day!

Included with admission:

  1. Decorate cookies and Christmas ornaments

  2. Write letters to and take photos with Santa

  3. Play games or watch a film in the theatre

Key thing to note is that kids (age 6-15) are free before noon and children 0-5 are always free. Alberta residents also save 20% when they book in advance online.

The Locked Room

I was surprised to learn that kids six and up can actually take part in the Locked Room, making it a unique family activity to do over the holidays. They have a Christmas themed locked room called the Christmas Caper, and the cool thing about this room is that a live actor takes part with you to help move the story along and also give you any tips if you need them.

Winsport Tube Park

Winsport’s Tube Park is open again this year, and may be one of the coolest things you can do with your family this holiday season.

Billed as one of the fastest tube parks in western Canada, Winsport’s tube park will not disappoint for the adventure seeker in the family. They’re open December 26 – January 5th every day. Then every weekend for the remainder of winter (weather depending).

Noon-Years Eve at Southcentre

I don’t know about you, but my kids can’t make it till midnight and even if they could I don’t want them to as they’d still be up at 6 am the next morning. So, Noon Years Eve at Southcentre is the perfect family activity for New Years in Calgary.

This free, family-friendly event has a host of things including:

  1. LED Dance Floor

  2. Face Painting

  3. Crafts

  4. Prizes

  5. and Music

The ALSO have a countdown and balloon drop at Noon for the little ones to enjoy New Years without needing to stay up till Midnight.
