So, it’s fall, and if you’re anything like me, your brain is already scattered in a million different directions. The days are getting shorter, and that "back-to-school" energy has you feeling like you need a nap...or six. But guess what? There are a few things we should probably get done before winter sneaks up on us - or assaults us out of nowhere. Here’s a friendly reminder for my fellow ADHD'ers (and anyone else who feels a little overwhelmed) on how to adult through this seasonal shift.
1. Rotate Your Wardrobe (aka, Where Did I Put My Sweaters?)
It’s officially time to say goodbye to shorts and flip-flops. Dig out those cozy sweaters and jeans from wherever you stashed them last spring. Bonus tip: Try to keep your summer clothes organized as you put them away, so future you isn’t cursing past you next year.
2. Prepare Your Home for Cooler Weather (Because No One Likes Cold Toes)
Let’s be real—fall comes with a whole list of adulting tasks. But hey, we can tackle them together! Start by checking your heating system, change that furnace filter (I recommend these ones) This is also a good time to weatherproof your windows and doors. Maybe even swap out your lightweight blankets for something a bit more toasty.
3. Update Your Emergency Kit (Because Murphy’s Law)
ADHD means we’re always ready for chaos, but let’s try to be proactively ready this time. Check that your emergency kit has all the basics: flashlights, batteries, candles, a cozy blanket, and some non-perishable snacks (because snacks are important). Don’t wait until the first snowstorm to realize you’re not prepared.
4. Plan for Holiday Shopping (Yes, Already)
I know, it seems early. But if we start thinking about gifts and budgeting now, maybe we won’t be scrambling at the last minute. (Maybe.)
5. Schedule a Car Maintenance Check (Because Winter is Coming)
Fall is the perfect time to make sure your car is ready for the colder months ahead. Schedule that oil change, swap your summer tires for your winter tires, and make sure your heating system is working. This way, you can avoid a mid-winter breakdown that’ll definitely make you late for something important.
6. Organize Your Finances (Or at Least Pretend To)
Okay, deep breath. The end of the year is creeping up, which means taxes and all that fun stuff. Take a moment to review your budget, or, if you don’t have one, consider starting one. Future You will be grateful. And if you need help, here's who I recommend (tell her I sent you!)
7. Refresh Your Fitness Routine (Because Our Brains Need It)
With the change in seasons, our routines might need a little shake-up. Consider trying a new workout class, planning some walks or moving your exercise indoors. Exercise is a great way to manage ADHD symptoms, so let’s keep it fun and varied.
8. Plan Your Fall Calendar (Because We’ll Forget Otherwise)
There are so many fun fall activities, but they’ll come and go if we don’t plan for them. Grab a calendar (or an app) and jot down anything you don’t want to miss, like apple picking, Halloween parties, or just a cozy movie night at home.
9. Update Your Skincare Routine (Because Dry Skin is the Worst)
Colder weather can really dry out your skin, so swap in some richer products to keep your face happy. And don’t forget to drink water, lots of water.
10. Declutter and Donate (Goodbye, Random Stuff)
Before we get buried under holiday decorations and gifts, take some time to declutter. Go through your stuff and set aside things you don’t need anymore. There are plenty of local charities that would love those gently used items.
Remember, we’ve got this! Fall might be a little overwhelming, but with a bit of planning (and a lot of coffee), we can handle it. And if you forget a few things, don’t stress—we’re all in the same boat.
