Halloween events and things to do in Calgary

October is just around the corner, and let me tell you, Calgary knows how to do fall right! If you’re a parent who’s ready for the cooler weather but still looking to get the kids out of the house (because, let’s be real, they’re climbing the walls), you’ll want to check out these awesome family-friendly events happening in town this month. Here are the highlights for some fall fun without too many spooky surprises.

1. Calaway Park Halloweekends

Dates: September 7th - October 14th

Location: Calaway Park

Let’s kick things off with Calaway Park’s Halloweekends. Imagine all the fun of a theme park, but add a dash of Halloween to the mix! Every weekend in October, you can dress the kids up in their costumes (because let’s be honest, they’re going to want to wear that Spider-Man suit every chance they get), and enjoy all the rides with some spooky, but not too spooky, decorations.

Farmyard Harvest Lights Halloween events and things to do in Calgary

2. Farmyard Harvest Lights

Dates: September 13th-October 27th

Location: Calgary Farmyard

Next up, Calgary Farmyard Harvest Lights. This one’s for the folks who love a good farm experience but with lights—lots of lights. Like, seriously, it’s magical. During the day, it’s all corn mazes and tractor rides, but at night? It’s like walking into a pumpkin-filled fairy tale. The kids will love it, and if they’re into animals, the petting zoo is a hit. Just be ready to explain why no, we can’t bring a goat home. Again.

Heritage Park Ghouls Night Out Halloween events and things to do in Calgary

3. Heritage Park Ghouls' Night Out

Dates: October 24th-27th

Location: Heritage Park Historical Village

Heritage Park is turning up the Halloween dial with Ghouls' Night Out. Picture old-timey buildings, but with ghouls, witches, and tons of fun without the heart-stopping scares (because none of us want to be dealing with nightmares at 3 a.m., right?). There’s trick-or-treating, a pumpkin patch, and lots of live performances that the kids will love. Plus, the whole "step back in time" thing makes it feel like a unique Halloween experience that’s easy on the jump scares but big on fun.

4. Winsport Pumpkins After Dark

Dates: September 20th-October 31st

Location: Winsport

This one’s all about the pumpkins—thousands of hand-carved, glowing pumpkins. The creativity is off the charts, and the kids will love seeing their favourite characters carved into these gigantic displays. You’re basically walking through a Halloween art show, and it’s stroller-friendly, so even if you’ve got a little one tagging along, it’s an easy night out.

5. Butterfield Acres Pumpkin Palooza

Dates: Weekends in October

Location: Butterfield Acres

If your kids love picking out the perfect pumpkin (and by perfect, I mean the first one they see but insist on checking every other one before circling back), Pumpkin Palooza at Butterfield Acres is perfect. You can hop on a hayride out to the pumpkin patch, grab some cute family pics, and let the kids run around while you mentally prepare for carving cleanup later. It’s great for younger kids since there are farm animals, and it’s less chaotic than some of the bigger events. Plus, you get to say things like, "Who’s ready to meet a real alpaca?"—which is pretty cool.

Screamfest Family Frights Halloween events and things to do in Calgary

6. ScreamFest Family Frights

Dates: Select dates in October

Location: Stampede Grounds

Don’t let the name fool you—ScreamFest offers a toned-down version of their spooky lineup specifically for families with kids. Think of it as spooky-lite, where they dial back the horror and ramp up the fun with Halloween games, mini haunted houses (not too scary!), and loads of treats. If your kids are a bit older and are starting to dip their toes into spooky stuff, this is a great middle ground. They’ll get a taste of the haunted experience, but no one’s sleeping with the lights on.6 Halloween Events and Places to Visit in Calgary.
