One of my most favourite things to do with Clara – and I’m sure with Ryker once he gets a little older – is date days. A couple of weeks ago we took part in one that goes down as one of the most fun days we’ve had to date. We were invited to attend a DIY Cake Decorating day at Cakeify in Bridgeland and what resulted was a poorly decorated cake but LOADS of fun.
What is DIY Cake Decorating?
As I’ve mentioned in posts like How To Make Cooking With Your Toddler Fun I don’t really do much cooking or baking in our house. That’s something Jane does and has been a great source of entertainment for her and Clara over the last three years. Luckily, at Cakeify you don’t need to know how to bake and they help you with everything.
Cakeify simplifies the cake decorating process by providing various items you might need including an in-house baked cake, buttercream icing, fondant, tools and lots and lots of sprinkles. Cakeify calls themselves a collaborative of local cake artists that will bring their unique styles to the table and work with customers to develop their cake vision.
With Clara’s peanut allergy I’m always weary of doing food based activities but Cakeify is a nut-free aware facility and even offer gluten free options.
At Cakeify you can also order pre-made cakes and cupcakes ranging in price from $22 to $185. You can also take part in classes that range in price depending on the class – more info here.
Here are some pictures of our experience but I want to reiterate that our design is the collaborative effort of a Dad that has never decorated a cake before and a toddler that LOVES sprinkles. I don’t want our funny looking cake to reflect poorly on the talent levels of the staff that were SO HELPFUL. In fact, the women decorating cakes next to us (and enjoying a mimosa might I add) made stunning cakes with the help of the staff at Cakeify. I really can’t recommend this activity enough. It was SO fun to do with Clara and I was amazed at how focused she was on it for the whole time we were there.
